Education Ministry commissions $21M Mobile Counselling Units 

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday commissioned two new Mobile Psychosocial Units at a cost of $21 million.

Minister of Education Nicolette Henry during brief remarks at the Ministry’s location in Brickdam Georgetown said the two new units will allow for quality counselling support to students with a physician on board.

The Minister said the Government is hoping to extend the same services to teachers and parents in the future. The mobile units will be on schedule to visit and deliver health and social services to communities in different regions.

The services provided are being done in collaboration with the Ministries of Public Health and Social Protection.

“It is my hope and my desire that these units will operate not only in Georgetown but go beyond Region 4 and reach other students who are most in need and who are most vulnerable and live in perhaps some of the most difficult parts of this country that really needs support, sometimes beyond psychosocial,” the Minister said.

Guidance Counseling Officer, Wendy Collins said it is not enough to just sit in their offices and noted that Counsellors must travel to the different regions.

The first psychosocial mobile unit was launched last year.
