Berbice Bridge to appeal High Court ruling which deemed gov’t takeover legal 

The Berbice River Bridge on Friday said it was disappointed at this week’s ruling of Chief Justice (ag), Roxanne George – Wiltshire S.C., which deemed government’s takeover of the bridge’s operations legal.

The Bridge company in a statement said it had consulted with its attorneys-at-law and the Board of Directors and had concluded that the recent ruling ought to be challenged.

The bridge company had in 2018 announced an exorbitant increase in tolls, but the government blocked the move, with Minister David Patterson issuing an official toll order for the operations of the bridge be assumed by the government.

“The Company has, on many occasion (s) pointed out that successive governments have failed to honour  the Agreement for annual adjustments of the toll to cross the bridge, resulting in accumulated loss of billions of dollars to the Company,” the bridge company stated.

The company said that since June 2015, the Minister of Public Infrastructure has consistently refused to meet to discuss toll adjustments.

The company said since the takeover, it has been operating at a loss.
