Mommy’s Corner, a newly formed women’s support group, on Sunday spread Christmas cheer to children of former sugar workers from the now closed Wales Estate, West Bank Demerara.

Co-founder of the group, Madonna Ghanie, told the News Room that this is what the season is about and what Mommy’s Corner represents.

The group held a Toy Drive at Wales where approximately 150 children received a present from Santa Claus and were also given “goodie bags.”

The simple event was organized by Mommy’s Corner and the Neighbourhood Democratic Council, in collaboration with BM Auto Spares, Bad Monkey, Demerara Bank Limited and two private persons Daniel Parsram and Dipitya Persaud.

Ghanie explained that the idea for the group was created in May 2016.
“…. everyday we go through a lot of trials in our lives and sometimes we need someone to talk that we can relate to; we can’t go to a single person and relate mommy stuff,” Ghanie said.

Mommy’s Corner provides support to mothers in whatever way they can and have also extended support to fathers. The group has members who are all mothers from the East Bank, East Coast and West Bank of Demerara and Georgetown.

Apart from socializing and supporting each other, the group also carries out charitable activities such as back to school drives and clothing and food drives.

Co-founder, Zamena Khan said: “It is a support group for our mothers; we have a private group chat and everyday we have different discussions about different things.

“…and its not just for our mothers we have our kiddies day once per month.”

Mommy’s Corner plans to establish a safe haven for domestic violence victims and also employ certified personnel to help these persons.

Mothers are being encouraged to join the group and also reach out and ask for assistance.
