Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo on Saturday said the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will have to make “the approaches at the right time” to the authorities to facilitate a vote recount given the restrictions in place to fight the spread of the new coronavirus.

While GECOM has already decided that there will be national recount of votes cast on March 02 and is working out the arrangements for it, the Prime Minister said “we don’t know if there will be any such recount”, referring to the fact that the matter is still in the courts.

The Court of Appeal will rule Sunday on the case brought before it challenging a Full Court ruling that the High Court could not carry out a judicial review of GECOM’s decision to undertake the recount.

Nagamootoo, who chairs the National COVID-19 Task Force said GECOM is a constitutional body and so the authorities would have to “navigate” the issue once GECOM makes the approach for provisions to facilitate the recount.
