Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence has confirmed that an additional two persons have been tested positive for the new Coronavirus as of Monday, April 6 bringing the total number of cases to 31 in Guyana.

Of that number, eight persons are in the Intensive Care Unit and one person is in a critical condition.

The number of deaths in Guyana from the disease remain at four.

The Minister said 23 persons are in isolation with from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.

Minister Lawrence, in her daily update to the media, also revealed that eight persons have recovered from the disease and were removed from isolation to quarantine. Those persons are all related to Guyana’s first positive case which was confirmed on March 11.

She said three of the eight persons have tested negative for COVID-19.

To recover from COVID-19, the World Health Organisation prescribes that after a 14-day quarantine period, two negative laboratory tests be completed 24 hours apart.

Lawrence noted that a total of 115 persons have been tested for the disease of which 84 results were negative.

The negative results included one person whose test previously returned inconclusive.

Thirty-five persons are in quarantine. The Minister said of the 35 persons in quarantine, there are ten in Region Three, 22 in Region Four and three in Region Six.

As of Monday, 1,495 calls were made to the COVID-19 hotline. The calls were received from Regions three, four and ten.

Meanwhile, the Minister urged persons to adhere to the curfew implemented from Friday, April 3 as she expressed concerns that persons are still congregating at different locations after 18:00hrs.

“COVID-19 does not pick and choose whom it will affect…if you don’t adhere, it is very likely that you will contract this disease and may die,” she noted.
