55 COVID-19 cases recorded in Guyana

As of Wednesday, April 15, 2020, Guyana recorded a total of 55 cases of the new Coronavirus Disease, an increase of seven new cases in less than 24 hours; there are five persons in COVID-19 ICU.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Shamdeo Persaud during the Ministry of Public Health’s daily update Wednesday said of the total number, four persons had a known travel history and the others contracted the disease internally.

The total number also represents the six deaths recorded.

Dr Persaud highlighted that most of the cases are from Georgetown and that Region Four represents more than 80% of the cases. He said most of the persons who tested positive are males.

“In the over 50 groups, males and females are almost equally affected. However, in the 30 – 49 age group, most of those who tested positive is almost 4:1 when comparing males to females,” the Chief Medical Officer said.

Between February 26 to April 15, 250 persons were tested of which 195 are negative; eight persons have recovered thus far.

Forty-one persons are in institutional quarantine and 25 are in isolation.
