Residents of Wismar Housing Scheme Linden Region 10 are mourning the death of one of their own – 49-year-old Sydney Trellis popularly known as ‘Jacket’ – who died from the new Coronavirus disease on Saturday night.

The visually impaired man was fighting for his life in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Trellis became Guyana’s seventh COVID-19 victim who was transferred from the Mackenzie Hospital to the Georgetown Public Hospital last week.

Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence confirmed the death late Saturday night.

Earlier Saturday, the Ministry of Public Health revealed that five persons were in the ICU.

On April 14, Linden recorded its second case after a 29-year-old woman tested positive; it was found that she had come into contact with Trellis.

She is currently warded at the Diamond Hospital on the East Bank of Demerara.

The last COVID-19 death in Guyana was recorded on April 8 and the victim was veteran engineer, Colonel John Percy Leon Lewis, 77.

He was tested positive for the disease after he died.

The first death was recorded on March 11.

As of April 18, Guyana recorded 63 cases of the diseased, including the number of deaths.

Of the 63 positive COVID-19 cases, four are imported cases and the other 59 persons contracted the disease in Guyana.

The confirmed cases in Region #4 represent 87.7 % with most cases in Georgetown.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story initially stated that Trellis resided at Wisroc when in fact he resided in Wismar Housing Scheme. The News Room apologises for any inconvenience caused.
