Guyanese political activist dies from COVID-19 in US

A 44-year-old political activist is the latest known Guyanese to have lost his life to the new Coronavirus Disease in the United States of America.

Marvin Pearce, an active supporter of the APNU+AFC Coalition died on Monday morning at a hospital in New Jersey, according to a close associate.

The News Room understands that Pearce was tested positive for the disease and was hospitalised for just a few days before his death.

Pearce, formerly of Georgetown, visited Guyana during the recently concluded elections campaign.

He also served as a pageant organiser for the Miss Guyana Talented Teen Pageant and worked as an operator at the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company before migrating.

His relatives are not in a position to speak with the media, however, condolences flooded his social media page on Monday as many described him as a warrior and a fun-loving person.

As of April 11, the National COVID-19 Task Force (NCTF) reported that 34 Guyanese had died from COVID-19 in the US.

The Consulate General of Guyana in New York, Barbara Atherly has created a Facebook page –Honoring Guyanese lost to Coronavirus –where persons have been posting photos and memories of their loved ones who died from COVID-19 complications.

The US has so far confirmed 720, 605 cases according to the World Health Organisation and 34, 203 deaths.
