Curfew extended to June 3; new order includes special treatment for health workers

The Government has extended the COVID-19 emergency measures to June 3, which were implemented under the Public Health Ordinance from April 3.

The restrictions, which includes a curfew from 6pm to 6am, were scheduled to end on May 3 but will now end on June 3, an order in the gazette revealed Thursday.

This also means that the international airports and all non-essential businesses will remain closed.

New measures in the order include preferential treatment for healthcare workers who visit banks or other financial institutions, markets or supermarkets, food services and restaurants open for delivery or drive-through and gas stations.

According to the order, “the worker shall not join a line but shall be given preferential treatment on submission of proof of identification.”

One other new measure includes the opening of of the Kurupukari crossing from 6am to 5pm and only to facilitate the passage of essential services and supplies.

The Government has decided to extend the restrictions given the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

As of April 30, Guyana recorded four new cases of the deadly disease in less than 24 hours bringing the total number to 82, including nine deaths.
