UG denies demanding tuition from students, says deadlines relaxed

The University of Guyana in a statement on Monday denied demanding tuition fees from students.

Several students received an email from the Registry stating that their tuition date has been extended to May 30. Some have raised concerns that they are still required to pay a facilities’ fee but since the implementation of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, they have not been using those facilities.

UG’s Transitional Management Committee (TMC) in a statement said due to various queries from students, a blanket note was sent by the Registry Division via UG’s internal Students Records Management Systems (SRMS) on May 22, 2020 explaining what new online procedures are now in place to facilitate payments during this period.

The Committee said some students have been paying their fees but “for those who are experiencing difficulty, all deadlines have been relaxed thus far.”

“The note from the Registry mentioned no deadline and should not be read as a demand for payment of fees,” it added.

The University of Guyana has been closed since March 16 with classes being conducted online.
