The United States will support those leaders and institutions that adhere to Guyana’s democratic principles and ensure the voice and will of the people is heard, Michael G. Kozak, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the U.S. State Department has said.

His comments come as the national vote recount enters the final stage with the PPP on course to score a large margin of victory. At the end of Thursday, the votes tabulated from the recount shows the PPP ahead by 16, 371 votes with 187 boxes left to be counted.

“We look to President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo to honour their commitments to respect the legitimate recount of the results,” Kozak posted on Twitter.

At the end of Friday, the PPP had 210,310 votes and APNU+AFC had 193,939. The three parties which joined their lists for the allocation of Parliamentary and Regional seats – ANUG, TNM and LJP – had a total of 4, 936.
