The Demerara Harbour Bridge will be closed for six hours on Saturday night into Sunday morning to facilitate the changing of a steel beam which was damaged during an accident in 2019.

The repairs will be done during the curfew period from 10 p.m on Saturday to 4 a.m on Sunday. The curfew is in effect from 8 p.m to 6 a.m.

General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) Rawlston Adams told the News Room Monday that “we’re closing because we have some structural maintenance to do, we have to change a Transom and that is one of the transoms that got damaged when the pontoon hit the bridge.”

“Then we didn’t change any transom, we did all other maintenance work and now we’re going to change the transom,” Adams added.

The harbour bridge was forced to close in September 2019 after a tug and a barge collided with the bridge.

As a result of the accident, that span of the bridge was shifted out of alignment and took more than 24hrs to fix putting a strain on commuters.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge is the major transportation link for Regions 3 and 4. It provides access for approximately 18,000 vehicles daily.
