Minister of Education Priya Manickchand on Friday said that Dr Paloma Mohamed has her full support in executing her duties as the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG).

The Education Minister was at the time responding to a question on the government’s position on the appointment of Dr Mohamed, incidentally as the first female Vice-Chancellor.

“Dr Mohamed is in place; she has my full support. She is going to enjoy that support so that together we can align UG’s priorities and delivery of education with what the country needs and the government’s vision,” she said.

Manickchand reminded that Dr Mohamed was elected by UG’s Council through a process that is governed by statutes in the University of Guyana Act.

She hastened to point out that questions on the government position must have been derived from public comments on what is happening at the institution.

“I don’t think she [Dr. Mohamed] can be unaware of how concerned people are about it [UG] becoming politicized and I hope she will take that into consideration moving forward,” she added.

Dr Mohamed was named Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG) back in June, becoming the first female to hold the post in the 57-year history of the University.

Professor Mohamed succeeds Professor Ivelaw Griffith who withdrew his request to renew his contract, which ended on June 14th, 2019.

Subsequently, a transitional management team led by Professor Mohamed-Martin has been running the university.
