From teenage pregnancies to body shaming, stereotyping and gender-based violence, a virtual rally in recognition of the International Day of the Girl Child plans to get real on the issues affecting young women and girls in Guyana. The rally will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2020.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud will engage girls from across the country about their struggles and also take recommendations from them on how the Government can assist them to live in a better world.

“It is a very important event for our Ministry and this one on Sunday is our flagship event where because of the nature of the discussion, I didn’t think we should not engage young women from across the country from all of the regions and we will be having frank discussions on various issues that young women are grappling with,” Dr Persaud told the News Room.

The rally will also feature dance, music, drama and poetry performances by the girls. Leading up to the rally, the Ministry also held a few competitions where the girls were given opportunities to share messages via artistic bookmarks and a 45-second video message on key areas and how they felt they would have broken barriers in their communities.

“We will be featuring some of the entries that we got from that competition,” the Minister said.

The Minister also noted that they will be working to have a more sustained programme for girls and young women. The rally will be aired from 4pm on the National Communications Network and E-Networks.
