With Regions One and Nine accounting for a total of 1,073 of the over 4,000 COVID-19 cases in Guyana, the Government will be implementing special measures in November to curb the spread of the disease.

According to the new order gazetted on Friday, non-essential travel into the two regions is restricted during the period November 1- 30.

Residents of the regions are only permitted to travel for reasons listed under ‘Essential and other Services’ of the COVID-19 gazetted order.

While gatherings in other regions are permitted for upto ten persons, in the Barima-Waini and the Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo Regions, gatherings are limited to five persons who are required to be six feet apart.

Further, the Regional Democratic Councils shall ensure that Government buildings, landings and means of transportation and conveyances are sanitised.

“Where the Ministry of Health considers it necessary, the Ministry may test any person for Coronavirus and quarantine or isolate and treat any person,” the COVID-19 order stated.

Any person who tests positive for Coronavirus shall be placed in a controlled or any other form of isolation approved by the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony.

The Joint Services are responsible for securing sites for quarantine, isolation, checkpoints, and provide escort for mobile teams as well as ensuring the security of entry and exit points.

Region One has so far recorded 697 COVID-19 cases while Region Nine has recorded 376 cases to date.

These regions are also located on the borders with Venezuela and Brazil which have seen their cases spiralling out of control.
