The Ministry of Health on Wednesday received 100 vials of Remdesivir from ANSA McAL Trading Limited to aid Guyana’s fight against COVID-19.

The company has committed to providing a second batch of 100 vials in one week’s time. Marketing Director, Troy Cadogan presented the medication to Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony.

Remdesivir is an anti-viral drug administered by Intravenous (IV) Therapy to COVID-19 patients suffering from severe symptoms.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the company, saying that the donation is timely as the drug is part of the government’s treatment protocol for the disease. Dr Anthony acknowledged that Remdesivir is expensive and becomes a greater challenge when one patient requires the use of ten vials over the course of treatment.

“We all have to work together to ensure that we have control of COVID-19. I’m happy that we’re getting some more Remdesivir available if somebody really gets sick. We are also extending to regional hospitals,” he said.

Minister Anthony lauded the collaboration with ANSA McAL and called on other private sector companies to support the Government’s initiatives to treat infected patients.

The Minister then appealed to ANSA McAL to use its influence to encourage other companies and their customers to understand the importance of mask-wearing, sanitisation and keeping social distance to prevent the spread of COVID-19. (Extracted and modified from Department of Public Information)
