$1.2B to be invested in Suddie Hospital

The Government will be investing $1.2B (US$6M) in the upgrade of the Suddie Public Hospital in Region Two in 2021.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony in an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Thursday, said a visit to the various regional hospitals discovered that the facilities and medical personnel are not being utilised to the fullest capacity.

“We’ll be doing a substantially new hospital…so we’ve had some discussions on that as well and I think it is being well received by the region. We’re also looking at some other infrastructural projects that we want to have there,” he said.

The Minister said it is also important that the medical staff who were deployed in the Hospital are “utilised optimally.”

In July 2017, the agreement was signed for a US$17.5 million line of credit from India’s Import/Export Bank will be used to upgrade and modernise the West Demarara, Bartica and Suddie hospitals.

The line of credit was originally assigned to the Specialty Hospital which was eventually abandoned by the previous Government.
