St Cuthbert’s Mission in the Mahaica River, Region Four, has recorded 97 COVID-19 cases to date – an increase of 39 in four days.

The indigenous community, with approximately 1,500 residents, proceeded on a two-week lockdown from Saturday last after teachers and healthcare workers tested positive for the disease.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony on Tuesday said: “we have done about 130 more tests and we expect among those that we will see some positive patients.”

While some persons are isolated home, two persons on Monday began displaying respiratory symptoms and were transported to isolation units in Georgetown.

During his daily COVID-19 update released by the Department of Public Information (DPI), Dr Anthony said: “We have been collaborating with the Toshao of the village and we continue to have that presence and monitor and of course do more testing.”

While schools reopened for Grades 10, 11 and 12 students on Monday, pupils in St Cuthbert’s Mission did not return to school.

A team of professionals from the Ministries of Health and Amerindian Affairs and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) are monitoring the residents to ensure that the situation remains under control.
