A total of 100 tablets procured after a fundraising concert by Ansa McAl was donated the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.

The tablets, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand revealed, will be donated to students in the hinterland areas who will be writing the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination in 2021.

The tablets will be preloaded with educational programmes to assist with learning during the pandemic. The Minister also stated that students in Guyana have been hit hard due to COVID-19 with no devices or internet connectivity to be involved in online learning.

The devices were handed over at the Ministry’s Brickdam, Georgetown location.

“Our children don’t have the facilities – devices or connectivity – to be able to get the kind of enhanced or supportive teaching that is recommended.

“It has been very challenging,” the Education Minister said.

According to the Minister, the government will be looking to distribute tablets to some 170,000 children at the nursery, primary and secondary levels.

The Minister explained that Guyana like many other countries have been grappling with the effects brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is very timely in fact we were waiting on this to add it to the bunch we have, cause we are little short right now so that we can upload our materials on this, so that they can study beyond the just the usual school hours,” the Minister said.

“We like to support things around education and more in the community development part,” Managing Director for Ansa McAl Troy Cadogan stated.
