In a demonstration of its generosity, the Rotary Club of Demerara has presented a monetary donation to the government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to aid the island’s volcano relief efforts.

President of the Rotary Club of Demerara, Bhageshwar Murli, on Wednesday presented a cheque for G$1,110,000 to Chairman of the Rotary Disaster Committee of Guyana, Andy Boyle.

Murli said the Club is proud to contribute to the relief efforts, noting that approximately 85% of the contributions were made by Rotarians.

“I would like to thank them all for going into their pockets and harnessing the additional generosity of donors and friends of Rotary,” Murli said.

“We can always count on friends of Rotary to continuously support our work and we are very grateful for that. We know these funds are going towards a worthy cause and we hope they help our Vincentian brothers and sisters in the recovery of their lives.”

Guyana has been sending aid to the volcano-ravaged island, reeling from the aftermath of the La Soufriere eruption on April 9, 2021.

A third shipment of relief supplies left these shores on Tuesday, destined for St. Vincent and Barbados, which has also been affected by the spewing of ash.

Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, in receiving the first shipment of 350 tonnes of disaster relief items last Saturday hailed Guyana as the head cornerstone in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

“I used to always say in the day when things were a little difficult in Guyana that they would be the head cornerstone in CARICOM…it is almost like biblical prophecy being fulfilled,” the Prime Minister said.
