Guyana’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) in collaboration with the Surinamese police intercepted and seized 902 kilogrammes of cocaine at Tafelberg, Suriname.

According to Suriname’s Nieuws Centrale, a Surinamese news agency, the intercepted drugs were being transported from Tafelberg, in Suriname’s interior to the capital city, Paramaribo.

The Surinamese news agency said the operation was carried out by a mixed unit, consisting of members of the Suriname Police Corps (KPS) and other security services.

Meanwhile, a press release from CANU noted that this seizure was a result of “close and intensive” cooperation between CANU, the Surinamese authorities and other partner countries in the fight against organised crime, particularly trafficking in narcotics.

“Organised crime is a transnational problem and requires trusted cooperation among law enforcement authorities in the region and further afield,” CANU said.

The inter-country collaboration, according to the unit, is part of the government’s multi-faceted approach to suppress and ultimately eliminate the scourge of drug trafficking in Guyana.

“The strategy will continue to be enhanced to deter traffickers from using Guyana territory to further their illicit activity,” CANU said further.
