Another 6 ‘COVID’ deaths; 236 new cases, 20 people in ICU

The Ministry of Health has reported that another six people have died from the disease, COVID-19 taking the local death toll to 374 deaths since March 11, 2020.

According to the Ministry of Health, these new deaths are:

– A 47-year-old female from Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) who died on May 25

– An 80-year-old man, also from Region Nine, who died on May 24

– A 53-year-old woman from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) who died on May 24

– A 73-year-old man from Region Four who died May 24

– A 60-year-old female from Region Four who died on May 24

– A 67-year-old male from Region Four who died on May 24

It was explained that these individuals were admitted to medical institutions with COVID-19 like symptoms but died while receiving care. Samples were taken at the time of their admission and subsequently, returned positive results.

Already, there have been 75 deaths in the month of May, making this the deadliest month of the pandemic. On Tuesday, seven deaths were reported, including the death of a 17-year-old boy.

April 2021, was previously the deadliest month with a total of 66 deaths.

Meanwhile, there are 236 newly-infected people locally. Dozens of infected people are from Regions Eight and Nine.

The new cases were recorded in Region One (two cases), Region Three (17 cases), Region Four (60 cases), Region Five (five cases), Region Six (11 cases), Region Seven (four cases), Region Eight (73 case), Region Nine (53 cases) and Region Ten (11 cases).

Importantly, there are also 20 people in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which treats those infected individuals who are severely ill. There are also 100 people in institutional isolation, 1,918 in home isolation and five in institutional quarantine. This means that there are 2,043 active cases.

There are also 91 newly-recovered people, locally.
