As of Sunday morning, all 10 of Guyana’s Administrative Regions are now affected by various levels of flooding.

This is according to Director- General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig, during a noon update on the countrywide situation.

Craig, along with a team from the CDC, visited several areas in Region #4 on Sunday morning to assess the flood impact in Georgetown, along the East Bank of Demerara, and the East Coast of Demerara.

It comes following days of outreaches to several other regions. Craig said as of Sunday, the two most affected Regions are #6 and #10. Up to Friday last, nine regions were affected with the exception of Region #8.

The Director-General assured that the CDC is doing everything it can to respond to the needs of those affected, by providing food and dietary supplies, along with cleaning and sanitisation items where necessary.

Additionally, with shelters already established in Region #9, which had been dealing with flooding for a week now, efforts are also being made to establish shelters in Kwakwani, Region 10.

The CDC would also be responsible of transporting people to these shelters where food and other necessities are provided.

Over the last two days, President Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retired) Mark Phillips along with several other government ministers have been fanning out across the country to flood affected areas to assess the situation and offer support to those affected.

Additional pumps have since been deployed to affected areas and hampers have been distributed to residents across the country.

The CDC, Ministry of Health and the Hydromet office, have all asked citizens to take the necessary precautions as rainy conditions coupled with high tides are said to persist over the next few days.
