Families of children with disabilities receive ‘quarantine care packages’

(June 8, 2021) The United Women for Special Children have recently been engaged in a community outreach exercise which saw 207 families of differently abled youths receiving quarantine care packages. 

Over the past year we have received multiple requests in isolation for support for various families who were struggling to provide the basic needs to simply make it through the month. 

It was decided that we would reach out to our schools and organizations that we work with closely and have them identify and provide us with 20 names (families) with differently abled persons who are struggling financially to make ends meet. We collected 207 names. 

Subsequently we approached our friends, business communities, donors and sponsors and described what we were trying to accomplish. 

The response was overwhelming. We explained that we were hoping to spend $10,000 on each hamper and would they be willing to sponsor a hamper. Needless to say, the generosity of our community is boundless. We managed to raise the 10k needed per hamper as well as receive in actual hamper items thereby increasing the value of the hamper exponentially.  

Because of their kindness 207 hampers were distributed from the 30th May to the 4th June, 2021 to the following schools:

4. No. 8 Primary School 
5. St. Barnabas Special School 
6. Harold B. Davis Special Needs School 
7. Resource Unit for Special Needs Children (Linden) 
8. New Amsterdam Special Needs School 
9. Sophia Special School 
10. Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities – Ganesh 
11. David Rose School 

As well as families identified through the Guyana Adoption Board.
