Four more Guyanese added to West Indies Rising Stars U-19 Camp

Four more Guyanese youth cricketers have been added to the West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 High-Performance Camp in Antigua, Cricket West Indies Vice-president Dr. Kishore Shallow confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Appearing on the Mason and Guest Radio Show in Barbados, Dr. Shallow said: “We realise that this is about identifying talent, this is about the boys playing cricket and representing West Indies, and we know how enthusiastic these youngsters are. I’m pleased to say…Cricket West Indies and the GCB (Guyana Cricket Board) have since made arrangements to facilitate an additional four players who missed out on an opportunity (initially).”

While Dr. Shallow did not divulge names, usually reliable sources told News Room Sport that Jonathon Rampersaud, Marvan Prashad, Zachary Jodah and Alvin Mohabir have been selected to join the 56 players who are currently part of the camp in Antigua.

It is understood the current executives of the GCB had submitted a list of eight players in mid-July from which this latest four have been selected.

The other four who were initially selected for the camp- Matthew Nandu, Mavindra Dindyal, Isai Thorne, Rampertab Ramnauth- were submitted by the previous executive of the GCB.

After the list of 56 players was made public by Cricket West Indies on August 2, the GCB had expressed displeasure over the fact that only four Guyanese were selected, calling it “shoddy treatment.”

World Cup in focus

The camp has been designed to help lift the players to the next level of physical and mental skills development, in the ongoing preparation programme for the 2022 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup to be played in the West Indies in January and February next year.

Along with targeted coaching sessions, the players will also compete in warm-up matches, and more intense “trial” matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and CCG international venues.

The final squad of 18 players will be selected for the West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 tour of England in September where they will play six Youth One-Day Internationals.
