JSL International onboard with Independent Living Skills Virtual camp

The Guyana Council Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) on Tuesday received a boost to its Independent Living Skills Virtual camp, compliments of local oil service company, JSL International.

GCOPD is currently implementing an Independent Living Skills Virtual Camp for approximately 50 young persons with disabilities from Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and 10.

JSL’s Assistant Country Manager, Renatha Bovell remarked that the company was excited to come onboard upon learning of the Virtual from Ganesh Singh, who is the Programme Coordinator at GCOPD.

She said: “Even though we are operating the midst of a pandemic, I am happy that we are still able to engage the youths so we were excited to lend our support.”

That support, according to the Assistant Country Manager, will not be “one-off” as the company intends to continue collaboration with the GCOPD.

Ganesh Singh, in his remarks, noted his appreciation for the support from JSL.

He explained that the overarching goal of camp is to promote the empowerment and independence of young persons with disabilities through innovative learning sessions.

“The young persons will be engaged in skills like public speaking activities, mental health awareness, career guidance, sexual abuse, child abuse and a number of other fun activities.”

The Virtual camp commenced on Monday and will conclude on Friday.

The GCOPD is the umbrella body that represents the majority of Disable People Organisations (DPOs) from across Guyana, working in the areas of advocacy and capacity building.

The DPOs represents all types of disabilities.
