Intoxicated driver arrested after crashing into tree

Thirty-seven year old Mitchell Debideen of Hosororo Hill, North West District (NWD), Region One was on Sunday arrested after crashing his Toyota wagon while reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

His passenger, 54-year-old Edger Adams also of Hosororo received head injuries as a result of the collision. Police said that the accident occurred at around 13:00 hrs on the Wanina Public Road, Mabaruma.

According to the police, Debideen was proceeding west in motorcar PNN 1366 along the public road when he lost control and collided with a tree on the southern side.

Police were summoned to the scene and Adams was taken to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital; his condition is listed as stable.

Footage released by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) showed the driver being restrained by a citizen moments after the accident as he argued with police officers at the scene.

He remains in custody as investigations continue.
