Angold Thompson, the former General Manager of the Guyana National Printers Limited, perished at his house in Campbellville, Georgetown after he managed to save his wife from a fire that engulfed their home early Tuesday morning.

Angold was 76-years-old; he lived at the corner of John Street and Stone Avenue in Campbellville with his wife, children and grandchildren.

“At about 2 o’clock this morning, I heard my niece yell out fire and I run out the house and noticed smoke coming out of the middle room,” Kioja Thompson, the man’s 37-year-old son told the News Room on Tuesday morning.

Kioja said he went to a pipe at the front of the yard and tried to extinguish the fire. But, by that time, it had already gotten out of control. As such, he rushed to save one of his nieces who was trapped inside a room.

According to Kioja, his father managed to save their mother from the upper flat of the building but he (Angold) went back into the burning house to retrieve some items and became trapped.

He subsequently perished. Later on Tuesday morning, firefighters were able to retrieve his body; an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the man’s son and family members are trying to grapple with the loss of their father.

“Even if it was just this and you know all of us was safe, you know, I [would have] still feel (better),” the grieving son contended.

As they grapple with this loss, Kioja also related that the family- including one of his sisters who is visiting from the United States with her children- will stay with another sibling on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) until they can rebuild.

He said they would be grateful for any assistance that can be provided. His contact number is +592-676-9496.
