Three more persons who tested positive for the coronavirus died in the past 24 hours, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony revealed on Wednesday.

Dr Anthony, who was speaking during his daily COVID-19 update, also revealed that the three victims were unvaccinated. This follows seven unvaccinated persons who also died between Monday and Tuesday.

The latest fatalities take the COVID-19 death toll since March 2020 to 656 and also means that 32 persons have died for September thus far.

In recent weeks Guyana has seen an alarming increase in positive COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths.

The Health Minister said there is also an increase of positive patients being placed in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit at the Infectious Diseases Hospital located at Liliendaal.

    Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony.

“If you get the severe form of the disease it would require hospitalisation and you would have to come into the ICU.

“We know this happens with the Delta Variant and that is why we have been asking persons to be very careful and take precaution,” Dr Anthony said.

Meanwhile, some 290 people have also tested positive for the virus within the last 24hours with 125 of them hospitalised. Active cases have increased to 2, 646.

The country’s Health Minister continues to urge persons to get vaccinated.

Guyana reached a new record on Tuesday with 6, 103 people vaccinated against the virus on that day along; this number includes 2, 678 children between ages 12 and 18; 2, 507 adults received their first dose vaccine and 916 received second doses.

To date, 33.2 per cent of the adult population have been administered a first dose vaccine; 63.4 per cent are fully immunised and 20.9 per cent of children between 12-18 have been vaccinated with the Pfizer jab.
