The gap between the number of people vaccinated in most regions of Guyana and Region 10 has significantly widened since the Upper Demerara- Berbice area continues to record a low uptake of the COVID-19 vaccines.

This is according to information provided by the Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony during his daily COVID-19 update on Friday.

Dr. Anthony said more than 65 per cent of the adult population in most regions of Guyana have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The exceptions to this are Region Two, which has recorded a 57 per cent uptake of the first dose of the vaccines; Region Eight which has a 44 per cent uptake of these vaccines and Region 10 which only had a 29. 7 per cent uptake.

Region 10 is also lagging significantly behind on the uptake of the second doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, according to Dr. Anthony’s information. And this, he said, is worrying.

“…We know that vaccines can help to reduce transmission, they also would certainly help to reduce persons going into hospital and reduce deaths.

“If you have cases going up and vaccination rates low, we are going to see a lot of people coming into the hospitals,” Dr. Anthony explained.

The percentage of the population that is vaccinated, according to Dr. Anthony is as follows:

    1. Region One: 78.8 per cent (first dose) and 34.8 per cent (second dose)
    2. Region Two: 57 per cent and 33.5 per cent
    3. Region Three: 66.6 per cent and 35.1 per cent
    4. Region Four: 78.3 per cent and 44.8 per cent
    5. Region Five: 68.6 per cent and 41.2 per cent
    6. Region SIx: 71.3 per cent and 39.6 per cent
    7. Region Seven: 69.4 per cent and 34.7 per cent
    8. Region Eight: 44.1 per cent and 29.4 per cent
    9. Region Nine: 71.6 per cent and 39.3 per cent
    10. Region 10: 13.2 per cent and 29.7 per cent
