In recognition of Tourism Awareness Month in November and the promotion of a healthier lifestyle, Climb Guyana will host what it deems an adventurous expedition of the Kanuku Mountain in Region Nine from November 12 to 15.

Jamicia McCalman, Communications Officer for Climb Guyana, explained on Monday at Cara Lodge, Georgetown, that the adventure-driven race will take 10 teams on an “adrenaline-filled competition”, a first for Guyana. They will battle in intense competitions from Georgetown to Region Nine, which “tells a story of connectivity.”

Teams of two will represent Guyana, Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela and will compete for over $600,000 in cash and prizes.

Registration is currently open and will close on October 31, after which the selected teams will undergo two weeks of fitness work with Eon DeViera Goalkeeping Academy Inc.

Registration forms are located on Climb Guyana’s Facebook page and the fee is $50,000 per person. Climb Guyana is already in contact with the embassies as it regards overseas teams.

The overall budget for the multi-faceted expedition is GYD$5 million and thus far, Green Mango Media and some corporate entities have pledged support and they are in talks with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Health to offer support.

There will be a 100m Kayak race from McKenzie High School to Watooka Guest House in Linden through a partnership with Elite Kayaking and Nature tours.

The race will then move to Annai for an Arrow and Bow shooting competition, then the traditional Go-karting races in Lethem.

The action moves to a race up the Kanuku on November 13 for an overnight at Schaumburg peak after which they will camp at the Peter Alves Ranch in the Rupununi.

The intention is to broadcast the entire event live and have it rebroadcast on local television. The organisers are also seeking a partnership with the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation for regional viewership.

“Team Climb Guyana firmly believes that sporting events are great marketing tools for cities and countries worldwide and the successful rollout of this contest will have a positive impact on the image of Guyana as an adventure race location, and it is perfect initiative to boost and enhance Guyana’s tourism,” McCalman noted.

Additionally, McCalman said that vaccination is a requirement and they will be working to partner with the Ministry of Health to do pre-testing. There will also be medical teams along the entire journey to deal with emergency and other situations.
