When single mother Manda Baichu was pregnant with her son Divin Persaud, she never expected him to be born with any complications.

Little Divin was born with ‘clubfoot’, a congenital condition present at birth that causes a baby’s foot to turn inward or downward. In babies who have clubfoot, the tendons that connect their leg muscles to their heel are too short and these tight tendons cause the foot to twist out of shape.

The single mother who spoke to the News Room on Thursday relayed that her now three-year-old had to undergo corrective surgery in March of this year in an attempt to give him a chance at walking normally.

But the condition was not corrected and he now requires another surgery. The woman said that many nights her son would be unable to sleep because of the pain.

“Some days, he would try to walk on the foot but because of how [it is]; he can’t do it properly and then in the nights, he does can’t sleep because of the pain from walking on the side whole day.”

While the cost of this second corrective surgery has already been paid for in full by public-spirited citizens, the aftercare cost, however, is hefty and the single mother cannot afford it and is now turning to the public for help.

With this surgery, her son is expected to make a full recovery and will have a better chance at a normal life. Persons desirous of assisting the single mother can contact her on 604-5929.
