Guyana will host the 38th Food and Agriculture (FAO) Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean in 2024 after it received full support from all countries in the region on Friday.

The FAO is the specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) that leads efforts to counter hunger and improve countries’ nutrition and food security.

Every two years, this Latin American and Caribbean Conference is convened, allowing countries to deliberate on priority matters related to food and agriculture. This year’s regional conference was held in Quito, Ecuador where new strategies to combat climate change were shared.

And at this conference, Guyana’s Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha has underscored the need for financing to be equally available for indigenous people and small farmers across the Caribbean region.

Last November, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd presented Guyana’s bid to host this 2024 conference. And at the end of this year’s conference, all 33 participating countries supported Guyana’s bid.

“We are committed to working with all governments of this LAC region and with the FAO to prepare for (the next conference).

“We look forward to welcoming you in 2024 and to giving you a taste of the warm Guyanese hospitality,” Mustapha reportedly told the FAO in the Caribbean press team.
