Gov’t pushing creation, marketing of agro-products as more contracts awarded

The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is pushing the creation and marketing of agro-products, particularly those from small businesses, through the award of $40.6 million in contracts.

These contracts were awarded for supplies needed by the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC). The contracts were awarded on Tuesday at the Ministry of Agriculture in Bourda, Georgetown.

National Refrigeration inked a contract for $5.6 million to supply and deliver a chiller for use at the Guyana Shop. Information provided by the ministry noted that the chillers currently in use at the shop are branded by bigger companies and only allow for the storage and display of their respective products.

Consequently, there was a need for a chiller to accommodate “new entrants”.

Additionally, the GMC inked two contracts with Farm Supplies Limited for the supply and delivery of a generator and forklift. The generator is to ensure a supply of alternative energy for the operation of the GMC; the forklifts are needed for the loading of containers for export.

Importantly, too, the government is advancing works at retrofitting a building in White Water creek, Region One (Barima- Waini). Webster Engineering and Consultancy received a $13.6 million contract to supply agro-processing equipment here.

The Ministry of Agriculture inked a total of 35 contracts, valued at $1.4 billion.
