Guyana’s national rugby team, the ‘Green Machine’, received $2 million from the National Sports Commission (NSC) to help with their travels to the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Championship from April 23-24 in The Bahamas.

Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle presented the funds to President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, Ryan Dey, in the presence of coach Theodore Henry.

The seven-time champions’ opening fixture will be against Curacao on Saturday at 11:56h then they battle defending champions and nemesis, Jamaica from 15:14h. Their final group match is against the hosts from 18:54h.

With 15 men’s teams and six women’s teams set to take part in the two-day qualifying tournament for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa, in September, along with the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England, in July, a total of 58 matches are set to be played at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The top two men’s teams and one women’s team from the event will book their ticket to the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022, while the highest-placed men’s team eligible to participate in The Commonwealth Games 2022 will represent RAN, alongside Canada who has already pre-qualified for both men and women.

The Guyana Rugby Football Union has selected a 13-man squad for the championship.

Accompanying the team will be Sevens Head Coach Theodore Henry and Manager, Ryan Dey.

Squad: Jamal Angus, Godfrey Broomes, Tyrese Prescod, Avery Corbin, Michael Barrow, Michael Edwards, Lancelot Adonis, Owen Adonis, Peabo Hamilton, Rickford Cummings, Lionel Holder, Vallon Adams and Matthew Talbot.

In addition to the team, the non-travelling reserves are Dwayne Schroeder, Adrian Hall, Joshua Griffith and David Garnette.
