To commemorate the end of the holy/fasting month of Ramadan, Guyanese will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Monday, May 02.

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, marked by fasting, reflection, charity and prayer.

The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) said the crescent to now commence the month of Shawwal 1443 AH was sighted after sunset on Sunday.

“Reports received locally and regionally confirm that the moon was sighted,” a statement from CIOG noted.

The CIOG has accepted the reports and takes the opportunity to wish the Muslim community, Eid Mubarak!

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for one to three days, depending on the country. It is forbidden to fast on the Day of Eid and a specific prayer is nominated for this day.

As an obligatory act of charity, money is paid to the poor and the needy (Zakat-ul-fitr) before performing the ‘Eid prayer.
