President Dr. Irfaan Ali was ready for action on Saturday as he engaged a delegation of over 60 persons from Saudi Arabia who traveled to Georgetown for one day, scoping investment opportunities in Guyana.

But apart from business relations, the Guyanese Head of State believes the opportunity presented itself for the two countries to build on the relatively young bilateral relations.

Guyana and Saudi Arabia established diplomatic ties in February 2012 and with the return of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) to the government in 2020, the President sought to elevate those relations.

On Saturday he told the Saudi delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Investors Outreach, Mr Badr Al Badr, that Guyana was prepared to make land available to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to establish an embassy here.

“Within the next quarter, we must have movement on this,” Dr. Ali said while he addressed the Saudi representatives from both the private and public sectors.

The theme of the President’s address was of Guyana’s readiness to move from discussions to action.

    “We are ready.”

“We are ready for you to have a permanent footprint here,” Dr. Ali said as he cautioned the delegation not to second guess his offer or leave it for later.

He said, in turn, Guyana will also look to establish a footprint in Saudi Arabia.

In February 2022, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Member of the Council of the Ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir visited Guyana.

Last September, President Ali also met with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia and Head of the Saudi delegation to the United Nations General Assembly Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

It is against this backdrop that the President said he is ready to put words into action.
