Two days after the St George’s High School in downtown Georgetown was destroyed by a mysterious fire, parents of students are being asked to register them with Education Ministry on Monday.

The announcement by the Ministry stated that parents should visit its Lot 68 Brickdam office as of Monday, July 25, 2022, to participate in a registration process.

This process will assist the Ministry in placing students for the new academic year.

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham said the investigation is ongoing.

“It is expected that by Monday we should complete investigations,” Wickham told the News Room.

The fire started on Wednesday afternoon and quickly spread throughout the wooden structure.

“The whole aspect of firefighting was to save the building but the building was completely destroyed,” the Fire Chief related when asked if more could have been done.

Preliminary investigations revealed there were at least two teachers and a number of students in the building when the fire started.

At the scene, the News Room was told that smoke was seen emanating from the front section of the school and persons were immediately alerted. Persons in the building made it out safely.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand and Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn were at the scene. Both ministers noted that the destroyed school was a major loss to students and the country’s landmarks.

“It’s way too early for me to speculate as to what and why but we know that there were 421 students coming to this school and [they] will not have a school in September to attend; the entire school is gone,” Manickchand had said when asked to comment.

She further said that similar to other schools that were destroyed by fires, these students will have to be displaced but she assured that the children will be prioritized for placements in other schools.
