Five water treatment plants to improve water supply in Reg. 3

By 2025, there will be five water treatment plants in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) to improve the water supply and quality for residents as housing development expands there.

This is according to the Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues, who spoke at a house lot distribution exercise in this region on Friday.

There, the minister acknowledged that the quality of water is a challenge numerous residents experience. In fact, she said this is a problem across the country but assured the sizable gathering that the government plans to fix this.

This is part of a “strategic plan” with Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) to construct water treatment plants that will improve water quality. Additionally, wells will be built or expanded to improve water supply.

“There is a lot that is taking place and there is a lot for you to look forward to,” she said.

The government plans to establish more wells and treatment plants across the country to improve supply and distribution.

By 2025, all people residing on the coast must have full access to potable, treated water, while all people in the hinterland and riverain communities should be able to access water.

Currently, only about 60 per cent of people residing in the hinterland and riverain communities have access to a consistent supply of water.

Minister Rodrigues said that small communities will not be forgotten in this effort. She said that La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD), for example, is one community where efforts are being made to improve water supply.

Though there have been several attempts at improving the water supply there, she related that those have been futile. Now, however, the government plans to provide water to this community from the Pouderoyen plant.
