Eleven-year-old Bryaneliza Latchman made history at this year’s International Letter Writing Competition for Young People. The Queen’s College student coped the third place in the 51st International competition.

The local leg of the competition was organized by the Guyana Post Office Corporation in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and was open to all students from nine to 15 years.

The participants were tasked with writing a letter to an influential person on why and how to take action on climate change. Of the 23 local submissions, Bryaneliza emerged the winner with her letter addressed to the Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana, on some salient steps that can be acted upon to address climate change.

Bryaneliza’s letter was submitted to the Universal Post Union’s office in Switzerland to compete with submissions from a possible 191 countries. Her letter received the bronze medal and placed third, behind Turkey and Oman who placed first and second respectively.

At a simple ceremony at the Providence Post Office on Friday, October 7, 2022 to celebrate World Post Day, Bryaneliza received her prize of a laptop for the local leg of the competition, compliments of Nalico/Nafico Insurance Company, from Marlon Hendricks the Nalico representative.

The third-place award will be conveyed at a date to be announced.
