Shawn Shewram, a young Guyanese scholar, was on Thursday admitted to the bar to practice law in Guyana. It comes just days after he graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) in Trinidad and Tobago.

Shewram’s petition was presented before Chief Justice Roxane George S.C. by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes.

After his bar call, he told reporters that the decision to pursue his legal studies was not an easy one. It was one that required him to consider numerous variables that would, ultimately, impact his personal and professional development.

Finances and the number of years he would have to dedicate towards his studies were among those variables that demanded his attention.

“But when I started it, I realised that things happen when they’re meant to happen and as long as you have faith and you persevere, anything is possible.

“Even the impossible things seem possible after it’s finished,” the new Attorney-at-Law said.

    But that’s not all.

The decision to study law, he said, was made after he pondered where he saw himself in 10 years’ time.

Did he want to get involved in the business sector? Or did he want to be immersed in the legal field?

“I only saw myself doing one thing and it was being an Attorney-at-Law.

“Perhaps it was because I love to argue, perhaps it was because I like to read. I’m not sure what piqued my interest particularly,” he said.

Now that he has, evidently, chosen his career path, at least for now, he hopes to spend some time involved in various areas of the law before deciding on what area he would specialise in.

There’s more to Shewram than his dreams of becoming a lawyer, though. In fact, he has distinguished himself as a Guyanese scholar.

A few years ago, he was one of the Caribbean’s top performing students at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).

Later, he was the University of Guyana (UG)’s Best Graduating law student. Only a few days ago, he was recognised as the Best Graduating Guyanese law student at the HWLS.

He also copped several other awards for stellar academic performance.
