Heavy rain disrupts classes at CV Nunes Primary 

Over 200 pupils at the CV Nunes Primary School in Essequibo had to be sent home on Thursday due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The school’s headteacher, Cheryl Peters Moore explained that this has been a persistent problem whenever it rains.

“This problem is an ongoing situation whenever it rains, it is not this year or last year, from the teacher’s perspective it is way back since the school was built,” Moore said.

She told the News Room that when it rains, the corridors of the school flood and while the Regional Administration has done some work by raising the corridor to rectify the issue, the school is still affected when it rains.

“The way they lifted the corridor did not give scope for any blockage other than the doorway so whenever the water overflows and gets into the classroom it would not be able to drain out,” the headteacher explained.

The majority of the students affected are from Grades One and Two.

The headteacher said a total of 266 pupils and 16 teachers were affected by the inundation.

When the News Room visited the school parents were seen collecting their children, while workers from the Regional Administration were busy cleaning and bailing water out of the classrooms.
