Police investigators fished the lifeless body of a man out of the Mazaruni River on Wednesday but they have not been able to identify the deceased.

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that at around 15:00hrs on Tuesday, a female who identified herself as Lis Sam called the Bartica Police Station and reported that she received information from Henry Alphonso, a miner and claim holder at Barakat  Mining Concession, that his workers saw what appeared to be a bloated body of a human floating in the Mazaruni River.

As a result, at around 10:00hrs on Wednesday, a police rank went to Barakat Backdam, Mazaruni River where he made checks and observed the motionless body of an unidentifiable male floating face-down in the Mazaruni River.

The body was fished out of the river and found to be in an advanced state of decomposition. Due to the state of decomposition, no mark of violence was seen.

The body was clothed in a black short pants and a vest.

It was photographed and later escorted to Bartica Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead by Dr. Ramdat.

The body is currently awaiting transportation to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for storage, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.

    Investigation in progress.
