The Guyana Police Force on Monday confirmed that the couple found dead in an alleyway at Success Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara was electrocuted by an illegal electricity connection.

Sorojanie Hansraj, 32 and her husband, 39-year-old Prahalad Jagnarine were discovered dead by their 11-year-old daughter early on Monday.

Police said “a length of red and black wire was seen next to the two bodies.

“The wire was connected to an electrical post leading to their home.”

The Guyana Power and Light has since disconnected the wire from the post.

Neighbours in the area were awakened by the screams of the little girl after she discovered her dead parents in the alleyway.

Police reported that Jagnarine was found with burnt marks on his neck, chest, and right wrist while Hansraj had burnt marks on the left wrist and left side back.

According to the couple’s only child, her father was drinking at a shop in the area on Sunday and, at about 18:00hrs, he contacted her mother and told her to come for him.

After the couple never returned home and calls to their phones went unanswered, the daughter went searching for them on Monday and discovered their bodies in an alleyway.

The traumatised young girl said she checked to see if her parents were breathing and neighbours assisted by cutting the wire from under their bodies.

Jagnarine, a taxi driver, had one of his legs amputated and would often call his wife to pick him up when he is out.

The News Room understands that Hansraj worked at the Georgetown Public Hospital as a maternity nurse.

The family moved to the area about two years ago and relatives described the couple as loving and hardworking
