    Dr. Suruj Harrichand, who recently completed specialist training in cardiology from the University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara, Cuba with a 98.16 per cent pass, is set to return to Guyana to serve his country.

    A release from the Guyanese embassy in Cuba noted that Dr. Harrichand, who hails from the West Bank of Demerara, commenced his medical training in Havana, Cuba in 2009 at the Latin American School of Medicine and later at the University of Medical Sciences of Ciego de Avila.

    After completing his Doctor of Medicine (MD), Dr. Harrichand returned to Guyana and worked at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) alongside the Cuban Medical Brigade.

    In January 2019, he continued studies in Clinical Cardiology at the University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara where he secured 98.16 per cent out of a possible 100, a social media post from the Embassy of Guyana in Cuba stated.

    Thereafter, Dr. Harrichand began to pursue an intensive program specializing in Clinical and Invasive Electrophysiology and Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices, the release noted.
    During his training, Dr. Harrichand performed surgeries involving 175 pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) implants as First Operator.

    In the course of his final year, he studied at the Ernesto Guevara Hospital in the Province of Villa Clara. His Medical Supervisors included Professor Elibet Chavez Gonzalez, Professor Raimundo Carmona Puerta, Dr. Juan Miguel, and Dr. Fernando Rodriguez Gonzalez.
