The homeowner who perished in a fire at Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara on Sunday was identified as 60-year-old Rajindra Mohabir.

The charred remains the man’s body was removed from among debris after firefighters managed to subdue a fire that had engulfed the property.

A statement from the Guyana Fire Service noted that the fire started at about 14: 16 hrs and water tenders from the Leonora and La Grange fire stations were immediately dispatched to the location, with the first tender arriving at 14:29 hrs.

“As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed, and Mohabir lost his life,” the Fire Service statement noted.

The Fire Prevention Department and the police have launched investigations to ascertain what caused the fire.

Mohabir lived in the building with his wife and two sons.

The building, situated at Lot 194 7th Street, also housed a grocery store and a small church.

The News Room was informed that there was a power outage and when electricity was returned sometime around 14:00hrs, persons reported that there was a spark in the shop.

It is believed that the spark ignited the blaze that gutted the property.

Mohabir never made it out alive.
