Guyana is keen on working alongside the other members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council to tackle some of the complex challenges facing the world, according to the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd.

“The international security landscape today is extremely complex,” Todd said while speaking to reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Cognisant of that, he said Guyana believes complex challenges must be carefully managed through the rule of international law and dialogue among states.

And while serving on the Council, Todd said Guyana will advocate for such practices.

Furthermore, Todd emphasised that Guyana, like other members of the Council, brings diverse experiences necessary to help the international peace and security body make fair decisions to improve the lives of people.

The Foreign Minister also expressed Guyana’s gratitude for the support given to it by the international committee as it sought election to the Council.

Guyana secured 191 votes out of a possible 192 votes; this was the highest number of votes received.

Starting January 1, 2024, the country will represent the Latin America and Caribbean bloc on the Council. The country served on the Council twice before, in 1975 to 1976 and then again in 1982 to 1983.

The other states elected are: Algeria, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia. Belarus failed in its bid to secure a seat for the Eastern Europe bloc; that seat went to Slovenia.
