Mahdia tragedy: 13-y-o receiving treatment in New York recovering well

The 13-year-old schoolgirl who has been receiving treatment in New York after she was badly-burnt in the fire at the female dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School is recovering well.

This is according to Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who spoke to reporters on Monday.

“She is now getting extremely good care.

“Last week, the team in New York was able to remove those tubes. She is conscious, she is interacting with nurses, doctors (and) her parents who are there,” Dr. Anthony said.

The young girl was flown to Northwell Health Burns Centre in New York on May 27, several days after the horrific fire which claimed the lives of 19 teen girls and a 5-year-old boy.

Though she is recovering well, Dr. Anthony said the girl has a long road to recovery because of her injuries. She is nursing severe burns and had to be intubated.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister noted that all the affected children who were receiving care at the Georgetown Public Hospital have been discharged.

“They have all gone back to their respective communities but we have a team in Mahdia that continues to provide psychiatric and psychological support,” he noted.

In Mahdia and in the far-flung Region Eight communities where the affected children hail from, teams of health workers have been dispatched to provide the necessary care to the children.
