NGSA 2023: Three pupils tie for top spot again

For the second consecutive year, three pupils have tied for the top spot of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).

They are: Glasford Archer from the Leonora Primary School, Ritisha Gobin of the Academy of Excellence, and Anaya Jagnandan of the New Guyana School. They all scored 506.7 marks.

This was announced by Education Minister Priya Manickchand at a ceremony to announce the 2023 NGSA results.

The highest possible score across Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies was 507.7.

The top student for Region One (Barima- Waini) was Sashana Henry. She was awarded a place at the Bishops’ High School.

The top student for Region Two (Pomeroon- Supenaam) was Avron Doodnauth. He was awarded a place at Queen’s College.

In Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara), the top spot was shared by Glasford Archer from the Leonora Primary School and Ritisha Gobin of the Academy of Excellence. They were awarded a place at Queen’s College.

Afreerah Ali, from the Chateau Margot Primary School, is the top performer in District Four which is Region Four excluding the capital city Georgetown. She got a spot at Queen’s College.

Diana Hariprashad of the Cotton Tree Primary School is the top performer in Region Five (Mahaica- Berbice). She will be going to Queen’s College.

In Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), three pupils tied for the top spot. They are: Jade Archibald, Aaron Anamayah and Annalisa Siriram.

In Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni), Aresia Cornelius of the Karrau Creek Primary School clinched the top spot. She will be attending the Bishops’ High School.

In Region Eight (Potaro- Siparuni), a Paramakatoi Primary School pupil Kyle Mark is the top performer. This pupil was awarded a spot at the St. Joseph High School.

In Region Nine (Upper Takutu- Upper Essequibo), Makeda Johnson of the St. Ignatius Primary School is the region’s top performer. She copped a place at the St. Stanislaus College.

Selah Erskine, of the Regma Primary School, is the top performer of Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice). She will go to Queen’s College.

And in District 11 (Georgetown), Anaya Jagnandan of the New Guyana School is the top performer. She will also go to Queen’s College.

Meanwhile, Manickchand noted that more children from public schools have copped spots in the country’s top five, or national, schools.

Of the 868 children placed at Queen’s College, the Bishops’ High School, St. Stanislaus College, St. Rose’s High and St. Joseph High, 499 are from public schools and 369 are from private schools.

Though there is much focus on top performers, Manickchand again emphasised that her ministry is focused on delivering equal education at all schools. That includes sound academic support alongside a focus on physical education, foreign languages, volunteerism, the arts and technical and vocational education.
