Mahdia Tragedy: Teen receiving treatment abroad to return home next month

The 13-year-old girl receiving life-saving treatment in New York after suffering severe burns in the horrific fire at the female dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School will return home in August as she continues her recovery.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony on Monday, at the sidelines of an event.

The young girl is expected to make a full recovery following several successful surgeries at the Burns Centre at Northwell Health, Staten Island, New York.

“She’s doing very well. She’s been at Northwell for a couple of weeks, [from] the Northwell team, we have a burns doctor who has been working with grafting and putting the skin in place that was burnt.

“We expect that she will be discharged very soon and will be able to come back sometime next month,” the Health Minister told reporters.

In June, the News Room was informed that the young girl is indeed recovering well but it was not clear how soon she would be discharged.

She was flown to the Burns Centre on May 27, a week after the horrific fire which claimed the lives of 20 children– 19 teen girls and a five-year-old boy.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Dr. Robbie Rambaran, had expressed gratitude toward the Northwell team for immediately stepping in to treat the young girl when they were contacted.
